Vibration Welders

The joining of thermoplastic materials with the use of vibration welding, is done by fusion of the contact surfaces. The local temperature increase, necessary for the process, is obtained by friction of one of the two parts to be welded. On the part subject to movement, is applied a thrust pressure in order to maintain in contact the parts to join together, during the welding process. This technology is suitable for the welding of thermoplastic materials with complex shapes or made of special materials, and represents a good alternative and in particular cases, it is more advantageous than ultrasonic welding. There are several typologies of vibration welders, which are characterized by the movement generated: - linear vibration welders, where the moving part is connected to the basement by springs similar to bars. The movement is being generated from two electromagnets. - orbital vibration welders, with concept similar to the linear movement but with three electromagnets, as a false motor. - circular vibration welders, where the movement is obtained by an electrical motor and with rotation of a shaft, with the possibility to generate an eccentricity and therefore a vibrating movement.

The electrical motor, operated by a proper drive, supplies the main rotating movement. By means of the programming keypad it is possible to set the frequency and, as a consequence, the number of rotations. The rotating shaft is being supported by bearings and is made with special geometry that makes it possible to transform the rotating movement into vibrating movement. On this shaft there is a slot with a build-up screwed plug. The slot dimensions are fixed, while those of the plug are changeable and determine the vibration amplitude.

Even with this technology, as for the other solutions, the sale has to be in close collaboration with the customer, trying to study carefully all the technological points of view related to thermoplastic materials, and to the geometries of the pieces that have to be assembled by vibrating welding.

In this image, you can see the different vibration typologies in comparison. As you can see, due to the movement generated they have totally different yields. For linear vibration welding there are zones where the velocity is zero, corresponding to the inversion of the direction of the linear movement. The energy created is highest when the velocity is zero, and zero when the velocity is highest. For orbital welding vibration, the yield of the system is certainly higher. The tangential velocity has a more constant proceeding, therefore the sinusoidal proceeding of the system is less accentuated. For circular vibration welding the proceeding is constant. The movement, without changing direction, allows to transmit the fusion energy in a constant way. The energy is not subject to fluctuations and, as a consequence, you obtain a quick and uniform material fusion on the contact surface between the parts.
